About the Smoky Saskatoon
This species is expert grown in a greenhouse facility.
The Smoky Saskatoon is a classic prairie favorite, celebrated for its sweet, full-bodied berries that are perfect for both fresh eating and all kinds of home baking—from pies and jams to syrup. This hardy native shrub is known for its dependable yields and vigorous growth, standing up well to harsh northern climates.
In early to mid-spring, the Smoky Saskatoon bursts into showy clusters of white blossoms that blanket the branches before the leaves fully unfurl. Through summer, dark green foliage provides a lush backdrop to the developing fruit, which ripens evenly in generous clusters. By late spring and early summer, the shrubs are heavy with rich blue-purple berries. As autumn approaches, the leaves turn golden-yellow, giving the shrub one last splash of color before winter’s rest.
