About the Smoky Saskatoon
The Smoky Saskatoon is one of the most widely planted prairie Saskatoons, selected from Alberta's native stands for heavy, dependable crops of sweet, mild-flavoured berries. Extremely cold-hardy and adaptable, it is a favourite for home gardens, U-pick orchards and the shrub row of a shelterbelt.
In spring, the Smoky Saskatoon is covered in clusters of white flowers that feed early pollinators. By early to mid July the branches are loaded with plump, dark blue-purple berries that are excellent fresh, frozen, in pies and in jams. The foliage turns orange to red in fall, and the berries attract birds if they aren't picked first.
