About the Canada Buffaloberry
This species is expert grown in a greenhouse facility.
The Canada Buffaloberry is a hardy, adaptable native shrub prized for its resilience and ability to thrive in poor or dry soils. Well-suited for shelterbelts, wildlife plantings, and naturalized areas, this tough prairie shrub withstands cold northern climates and provides excellent habitat and food for birds and other wildlife.
In spring, the Buffaloberry produces clusters of small yellowish flowers before leafing out with silvery-green foliage that shimmers in the sunlight. By midsummer, female plants bear abundant clusters of bright red berries—tart and edible, traditionally used for preserves and jellies. As autumn approaches, the silvery leaves and scarlet fruit add a splash of color and texture to the landscape before the shrub settles into winter dormancy.
