About the Balsam Poplar
The Balsam Poplar is a fast-growing native tree found across Canada, known for its glossy dark green leaves and sweet-smelling, resinous spring buds. Extremely cold-hardy, it is well suited to naturalizing, park plantings and the tall row of a farm shelterbelt.
It thrives in moist soils and low areas and quickly provides shelter and habitat. Like most native poplars it spreads by root suckers, and female trees release cottony seed in early summer, so plant it at least 30 ft from buildings and where fluff is not a concern.
